I love (dark) chocolate. Love. Love. Love. But whenever I’m craving a chocolate cake, I don’t want the hassle of baking a whole cake and worrying that it’ll go to waste because I can’t finish it fast enough. So, I love making this chocolate mug cake to nip that craving.
I made this chocolate mug cake for more than 10 years now. It’s so simple to make yet incredibly moist and delicious. It’s the best single-serving chocolate mug cake, and it’s also eggless!
I love having this chocolate mug cake on its own. But sometimes, I’ll add white chocolate chips over the top or add a dollop of peanut butter into the centre of the batter before microwaving. Most times, though, I love a simple chocolate mug cake with dark chocolate chips incorporated into the batter (plus a few more chips sprinkled on top!) and adding a dollop of Nutella in the middle. It’s the yummiest.

What is a Mug Cake?
A mug cake is a single-serving cake in a mug! It’s often cooked in the microwave for about a minute or two. Mug cakes are great because you don’t need to whip out a bunch of tools to make them whenever you get that chocolate craving.
Tips For Making The Perfect Mug Cake
- Microwave: All microwaves are different. Depending on your microwave, your mug cake may be under- or overcooked if you’re not careful. Many mug cake recipes instruct microwaving for 1 minute and 30 seconds. That time works for many, but mine turns out overcooked and dry. So, I always cook my mug cakes for only one minute. Experiment with different power levels and timings (between 1 and 3 minutes) to find the cooking method that works for you.
- Mug Size: Mug sizes also make a difference. A taller mug size will take longer to cook the cake all the way through. A larger and wider mug will take less time. Unfortunately, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all cooking method for mug cakes. So, experiment to find the cooking method that works for you!
Easy Single-Serving Chocolate Cake in a Mug
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose / plain flour
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons granulated white sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter melted
- 3 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons chocolate chips optional
Instructions
- In a large microwave-safe mug, combine the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir until combined.
- Add in the melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract. Stir just until combined and no streaks of flour remain.
- Stir in 1 tablespoon of the chocolate chips (if using) into the batter. Sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips over the top.
- Microwave for 1 minute or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the mug cake comes out clean. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Butter and Substitutes: You can use salted butter in this recipe and omit the salt. Alternatively, you can substitute the butter for a flavorless oil (such as sunflower, canola, or grapeseed oil) without changing the measurements. I do not recommend using strong-tasting oils (such as olive or peanut oils) as it will compromise the overall flavor of this chocolate mug cake.
- Chocolate Chips: I love using dark chocolate chips for this recipe! Feel free to add more chocolate chips if desired.
- Add-ins: I love adding a good dollop of Nutella into the center of the batter before popping it into the microwave – It’s the absolute yummiest. You can also add in peanut butter, cookie butter, almond butter, white chocolate chips etc.
