- 2 tablespoons all-purpose / plain flour
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons granulated white sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter melted
- 3 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons chocolate chips optional
In a large microwave-safe mug, combine the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir until combined.
Add in the melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract. Stir just until combined and no streaks of flour remain.
Stir in 1 tablespoon of the chocolate chips (if using) into the batter. Sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips over the top.
Microwave for 1 minute or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the mug cake comes out clean. Serve immediately.
- Butter and Substitutes: You can use salted butter in this recipe and omit the salt. Alternatively, you can substitute the butter for a flavorless oil (such as sunflower, canola, or grapeseed oil) without changing the measurements. I do not recommend using strong-tasting oils (such as olive or peanut oils) as it will compromise the overall flavor of this chocolate mug cake.
- Chocolate Chips: I love using dark chocolate chips for this recipe! Feel free to add more chocolate chips if desired.
- Add-ins: I love adding a good dollop of Nutella into the center of the batter before popping it into the microwave - It's the absolute yummiest. You can also add in peanut butter, cookie butter, almond butter, white chocolate chips etc.
